Stoneware with brown glaze dating from the Sukhothai Kingdom period, 13th to early 15th century, Sawankhalôk, Thailand. Delicate flask with an ovoid body and a small annular lip. Flat base inscribed with a reference, probably linked to the place of discovery. A shiny brown glaze from mid-height. Sukhothai period, 13th / 15th Century Perfect condition, no restoration Beautiful patina. - Dimensions: height 3.2 cm - diameter 4.1 cm. Provenance: Netherlands, D.Z.N. Sawankhalok/Si Satchanalai ceramics (also called Sangkhalok) are ancient Thai traditional ceramics specifically derived from the Sukhothai Kingdom period (1238-1438). The royal cities of Sukhothai and Si Satchanalai, in north-central Thailand, were at the heart of one of the largest ceramic production centers in Southeast Asia in the 14th century. Sukhothai is known for its coarser clay and displays many small dark specks due to the iron content of the clay. Sometimes these inclusions can be brown, red or silvery. Like Sukhothai, Sawankhalok mainly produced relatively simple forms: jars, bottles, kendis, bowls and plates. Ceramic products from the hundreds of kilns along the Yom River at Si Satchanalai as well as the town of Sukhothai were exported in large quantities to Indonesia and the Philippines where demand was strong. Sawankhalok items were also exported to Japan and the Middle East. Thai and Vietnamese ceramic exports rose when the Chinese imperial court banned foreign export during the Ming period (Ming Ban 1, 1371-1509), leaving a gap to be filled. provenance: Netherlands, D.Z.N.
