Ancient Roman Aqua Glass Bottle with Applied Crimped Trail Collar

Roman, Imperial period, probably Judea region. A free-blown pale aqua glass bottle with an ovoid body, a tall cylindrical neck, and a wide funnel mouth with a folded rim. A thick trail in the same hue is wound around the base of the neck and tooled into a crimped collar. Faint vertical ribbing is visible on the body beneath a surface of light earthy burial deposits. Bottles of this form were used to hold perfumed oils and other valued liquids, and the long, narrow neck allowed the contents to be poured in small amounts. It is displayed on a clear acrylic stand. Glassblowing was invented on the Syro-Palestinian coast in the 1st century BCE, and the region remained one of the Roman world's main glassmaking centers for the next five centuries. Local workshops used the naturally blue-green glass of the area to make large numbers of bottles, flasks, and unguentaria. In the Late Roman period they often decorated these vessels with applied trails, pinched collars, and tooled ribs. Item # 205222
