Alle Auktionen / Antike Kunst / Ancient Roman Bronze — Impressive military votive amulet...
Gladius/Pugio is a Roman sword; it was not only used by legionaries but also by gladiators, regardless of their background. It served as an amulet, offering protection against injuries they could face in the Colosseum arena. It is said to have developed in the late 3rd century BC—from a type of sword used by Iberian Celts—and it was the standard weapon of the Roman army infantry. Such amulets were used by Roman soldiers as a symbol of their strength and courage.
