Ancient Roman

Ancient Roman

An impressive Ancient Roman bronze crossbow-type fibula, distinguished by its characteristic arched bow, decorative ring-shaped mouldings, and preserved pin mechanism. This small artefact represents a fascinating example of Roman metalworking, combining practical functionality with the expressive geometry of an elegantly shaped bronze fastening device. Measuring approximately 45 × 12 mm and weighing 4.9 grams, the fibula displays compact proportions and a carefully designed construction. The Roman Fibula — Jewellery and Functionality In Ancient Rome, fibulae were used to fasten cloaks, tunics, and other garments. They served as practical fastening devices while also functioning as decorative accessories that could sometimes reflect the social standing of their owners. Fibulae with prominently arched bows and distinctive structural elements are particularly interesting examples of Roman craftsmanship. During the Late Roman period, certain varieties of crossbow fibulae became associated with military and administrative circles. However, not every brooch of this general type necessarily belonged to a soldier or official. The present example is especially appealing for its distinctive silhouette and clearly visible structural details. The Architecture of an Ancient Brooch The most striking feature of this fibula is its highly arched bow, connecting the decorative body to the fastening mechanism. Ring-shaped mouldings are visible along the structure, emphasizing the transitions between different sections of the object. The elongated body features a gently tapering profile. Beneath the bow lies a slender metal pin, originally intended to secure the garment. The contrast between the substantial curved bow and the relatively delicate pin creates a visually balanced composition characteristic of many ancient fastening devices. Bronze and the Traces of Time Bronze was one of the most widely used materials for manufacturing fibulae throughout the Roman world. Its strength and versatility allowed craftsmen to produce durable yet decorative objects suitable for everyday use. The present example displays a dark grey-green patina with natural surface irregularities, areas of wear, and visible signs of ageing. These features contribute to the distinctive character of the artefact while preserving the visibility of its construction and decorative elements. Condition The fibula retains its overall form, prominent arched bow, and components of the pin mechanism. The surface displays patina, minor irregularities, and traces of wear. The decorative ring-shaped mouldings remain clearly distinguishable. The functionality of the fastening mechanism has not been tested. Small personal objects offer an equally fascinating insight into the everyday lives of those who once inhabited the vast Roman Empire. A fibula was an essential element of clothing, accompanying its owner through daily activities, journeys, and social occasions. Today, such fastening devices are valued as tangible reminders of ancient craftsmanship and material culture. An attractive 4.9 g Ancient Roman bronze fibula with a distinctive arched bow and preserved pin mechanism — a fascinating addition to a collection of Roman antiquities, ancient jewellery, and historical dress accessories.
