Ancient Roman

Bronze Roman applique representing a clenched fist – 1st–III centuries AD. Reference culture: Roman. Dating proposed: Roman Empire, 1st–3rd centuries AD. Material: Cast bronze. Dimensions: 30 × 10 × 15 mm. Description for auction: Interesting and singular small figurative bronze applique, with a three-dimensional representation of a clenched human fist, crafted with a notable sense of volume and anatomical detail. The piece features an elongated forearm ending in a firmly clenched hand, with the fingers flexed and carefully individualized through incisions and reliefs. The modeling of the fist stands out especially, with pronounced knuckles, the folds of the fingers, and a marked separation between the hand and the wrist, details that provide great expressiveness to this tiny sculpture. At its opposite end it retains a fixation structure of irregular profile, integrated into the overall piece. Representations of hands and fists occupied a prominent place in Roman material culture, both in ornamental elements and in objects of symbolic and protective character. The clenched hand constitutes an image of strength, determination and protection within different traditions of Antiquity. Its small size and careful sculptural treatment make this piece an attractive example of figurative metalwork. It preserves a beautiful olive-green patina, with brown tones, mineral deposits and surface oxidations that enhance its details. Conservation status: Good overall condition, with a complete fist, fingers perfectly recognizable and part of the forearm and fixation structure preserved. An interesting piece for collectors of small figurative bronzes and objects of Roman tradition.
