André Rios - Beyond the Gaze

I am André Rios, a Portuguese award-winning artist based in the Netherlands, specialising in hyper-realistic pastel art. My work has received international recognition, including being selected as a finalist for the prestigious Wildlife Artist of the Year competition in both 2024 and 2026, as well as being featured in international art magazines, including cover features. My artistic practice focuses on capturing the extraordinary beauty of ordinary subjects, from wildlife and overlooked creatures to everyday objects. Through meticulous observation and attention to detail, I aim to challenge the boundaries between drawing and photography. This cat portrait reflects my dedication to realism, capturing the intricate textures of fur, subtle colours, and expressive character of the animal using pastel pencils. It is an example of the precision and patience that define my artistic approach.
