Alle Auktionen / Möbel, Design und Spiegel / Antique French 'Œil de Boeuf' (oxeye) wall clock with...
Introduction and History; Offered is a very well-preserved 19th-century French wall clock of the Oeil de Boeuf type (commonly referred to as the 'Ossenoog' in Dutch). This type of timepiece reached its heyday during the French Napoleon III period, around 1870. While most specimens from this era are fitted with a heavy, boiserie-blackened (ebonized) wooden case, this particular model differentiates itself with a warm, golden-brown wood grain finish. This gives the clock a softer and more elegant appearance, allowing the piece to fit beautifully in both classical and more modern interiors. Case and Inlay Work; The characteristic, undulating octagonal surround is handcrafted and in solid condition. The edge is richly decorated with authentic mother-of-pearl inlay work. The mosaic displays refined floral patterns and striking heraldic crosses at the top and bottom. The inlay work has been exceptionally well preserved and retains its characteristic deep luster. Dial and Hands; The clock features an original white enamel dial with the classic black Roman numeral indicators. The dial is equipped with the original finely pierced steel hands. As is customary with clocks of this age, there is a small and discreet aging spot at the very bottom edge (just below six/VI) in the enamel. This does not detract from the appearance and underscores the historic character of the object. Technical Condition and Operation; The clock has been technically checked and is in a ready-to-use condition. Movement: The mechanical eight-day movement runs smoothly, regularly, and properly. Striking mechanism: Fully functional. The clock strikes on the hour and half-hour with a clear, full tone on the original steel gong. Accessories: The clock is provided 100% complete, including the original pendulum and winding key. Specifications: Country of origin: France Period: Circa 1870 (Napoleon III) Height: 56 cm Width: 45 cm Depth: 13 cm Registered shipping.
