Antique German Engraved Gilt Bronze Tower Clock

Antique German Engraved Gilt Bronze Tower Clock

An impressive antique German gilt-brass tower clock (Turmchenuhr), attributed to the early 17th century, of elaborate architectural form. The richly ornamented case features finely engraved foliate scrollwork and decorative strapwork throughout, surmounted by a multi-tiered architectural superstructure incorporating pierced Gothic-style arches, turned baluster supports, balustraded galleries, a domed cupola, and an elaborate finial. The stepped rectangular base is raised on bun feet and similarly decorated with engraved foliate ornament. Fitted with an applied silvered dial featuring a Roman numeral hours chapter and a separate silvered quarter-hour strike indicator. The quarter-hour mechanism is arranged to strike the bell once at the first quarter (15 minutes past the hour), twice at the half hour, three times at the third quarter (45 minutes past the hour), and four times at the full hour, immediately preceding the main hour strike. The reverse of the movement is fitted with an hour-strike count wheel (Schlossscheibe), positioned adjacent to a separate quarter-hour strike count wheel, with winding apertures below. The clock bears a plaque, believed to be a later addition, engraved with a Latin inscription: "MVNERIS. IS SVMMI MONIMENTVM. EXILE. PATRONO QVELIBET. ET NOSTRI FAC MEMOR. HORA FLVAT. TEMPORA. DONEC ERVNT THESO- NEI ESIC ILLIVS. AETHER LAVDIBVS. ET NOSTRAS AV- DIAT VSQVE PRECES VT. CVIVS STVDIO. COELVM ACCEPISSE. FATEMVR COELVM ILLI ET TELLVS LA-GA REFVNDAT OPES" The inscription translates approximately as: "Let every passing hour flow as a humble monument of this highest gift to our patron, and let it make him mindful of us. As long as time shall endure, may the heavens resound with his praises and continually hear our prayers, so that—just as we confess to have received the heavens through his devotion—both heaven and earth may pour back riches upon him." From a Long Island estate. Dimensions: item measures approx. 7.75" w x 7.75" d x 15" h. Dimensions: 15"x8"x8" Condition: The clock appears clean, preserved, and original overall.
