Antique Marquise Gold Ring with Pink Sapphire & Diamonds, c. 1890 & Later

The warm glow of gaslight and candlelight, the rustle of shiny duchess silk and the scent of precious essences such as damask rose and ambergris: this ring takes us back to the end of the 19th century, to the boudoir of a society lady adorning herself for the evening ahead. For elegant evenings and gatherings in the salon, precious jewellery made of luxurious colored stones and diamonds was the order of the day. The pointed oval ring face makes this piece of jewelry a so-called marquise ring. It is set with shimmering rose-cut diamonds, in the middle of which a trilogy of a natural pink sapphire and two old-cut diamonds sparkle. The sapphire has a bright, pink-red color: In the past, this would have been referred to as a "female" ruby, as a distinction was made between "male" deep red rubies and "female", lighter, more pink to rose-colored rubies. Today, the pink-colored stones are referred to as sapphires. The ring was probably loved and worn a lot, as the undercut was later reinforced and the ring band completely renewed. This beautiful piece can now give many years of pleasure again.
