Antique Marquise Ring With Sapphire & Diamonds in Gold, Germany c. 1895

Just two centuries ago, diamonds were much rarer than they are today - even the precious jewellery of noble ladies was sometimes set with rock crystal or glass. It was not until the discovery of large diamond deposits in South Africa that diamonds became much more readily available in the last third of the 19th century. This set the course for the image that precious jewellery of the Belle Époque presents to us today: Sparkling in the light of countless diamonds. This ring presents a magnificent sight. The marquise-shaped ring face is set with fine old European cut diamonds in a glittering pavé. More than one carat of the precious gemstones transform the ring face into a firework of brilliant light reflections. To make their glow appear all the more radiant, a contrasting sapphire in a dark midnight blue is set in the center. The ring is made of 14-karat yellow gold and is beautifully preserved. We date it to the 1890s based on its design, fabrication and diamond cuts. About 30 years later, the ring band was renewed once in the style of the later time. We discovered the magnificent ring in Berlin.
