Antique Ruby Ring of the Art Déco With Diamonds in Platinum, Around 1920

Each gemstone has been given a typical meaning in the history of jewellery, which can now help with the difficulty of choosing a piece of jewellery. In the fashion magazine "Der Bazar", which was extraordinarily successful in the late 19th century, we read, for example, about rubies: "Rubies are especially suitable for young lovers [...] In general, it is considered the symbol of the most passionate and ardent love, the pearl, on the other hand, that of purity of soul." (November 1886). So the ring here could make a wonderful first love gift! The ring in question, which is exceptionally finely crafted, is forged from platinum and was created in the years around 1920. The jewellery fashion of the first decades of the 20th century loved the highest quality materials and precious gemstones as well as platinum, which could be forged into the most filigree designs. This material alone allowed designs of unprecedented precision. Rare coloured stones were often the protagonists of these jewels and always in combination with sparkling diamonds. This is also the case here: A precious, untreated ruby of wonderfully intense colour shows up in an oval facet cut and is set in the center of the design. The ring head is slightly domed and offers space for a total of 30 diamonds set close together as a fine pavée. Delicate shadow gaps divide the diamond surfaces into subtle arcs, giving the ring a light, floral feel. Every millimetre of the ring's structure is thoughtfully designed, its gallery finely engraved and openworked. It reveals details that only the wearer of the piece can see. To ensure that the ruby is an untreated gemstone, we sent it to the German Association for Gemstone Evaluation , who prepared a detailed appraisal report on it.
