In the late 19th century, the solitaire diamond ring became one of the most popular styles of engagement rings. In the United States in particular, the solitaire diamond ring established itself as a symbol of commitment, but in Germany and Great Britain as well, such a ring was among the most coveted engagement gifts. The solitaire’s success comes as no surprise, as its symbolic meaning is evident at first glance: the symbolic power of the closed ring as a promise of eternity is reinforced here by the choice of a single, exquisite diamond. The ring presented here is a truly ideal Belle Époque engagement ring. It features a brilliant and fiery old European cut diamond weighing 2.18 ct. The cut leans slightly toward a cushion shape, revealing the cutter’s effort to extract as much of the gem’s precious brilliance as possible from the rough material. The diamond has a subtly warm hue that harmonizes beautifully with the rose gold of the setting. The setting itself is crafted from high-karat gold and effectively showcases the diamond in a cup-shaped setting that allows plenty of light to enter. On the left and right, the band rises to form two protective, almost sculptural shoulders. The band wraps softly and comfortably around the finger, without any sharp edges—wearing this ring is a delight not only to the eye but also to the touch.
