Art Deco Filigree Bracelet With Diamond & Red Glass Pastes in Silver

With the invention of gaslight and then electric light at the end of the 19th century, glistening brightness suddenly filled the ballrooms of Europe and America. No longer dark, yellow candlelight, but the white glow of hundreds of lamps made the ladies' jewellery shine and glitter as never before. No wonder that a new fashion also emerged as a result of these developments: white jewels made of diamonds and silver responded to the new lighting conditions and replaced the previous more colourful designs. At the great balls in Paris, London and St. Petersburg, ever more magnificent diamond necklaces were presented, as well as tiaras, bracelets, brooches and rings, all dreams in white diamonds. The bracelet here, dating from around 1930, is in keeping with this fashion. It is made entirely of sterling silver and shines white. The delicate design is almost reminiscent of textile lace, so finely spun does the silver appear. In the center, the band widens and presents here a glittering diamond flanked by two red glass pastes. The bracelet was made in the USA. Not only the typical American design speaks for this. Fine designs that look like lace doilies were a big fashion here since 1920 and were to define the coming years of Art Deco as well. The hallmarking also proves its origin, because it is a work of the Shiman Cooperation, which operated under the name Esemco and was based in Newark in the state of New Jersey.
