As it was a reign of barely two years, the documents signed by Amadeo I are extremely scarce and sought after by collectors. Document complete and in good condition. Original from the period. It is the official title of concession of the Cross of the First Class of the Military Merit Order with a dry seal. Amadeo I of Savoy (Turin, 1845 – Turin, 1890), known as “the Knight King” or “the Elect,” was king of Spain between January 1871 and February 1873. His brief reign of barely two years constitutes one of the most turbulent and singular periods in the contemporary history of Spain. Son of King Victor Emmanuel II of Italy (House of Savoy), he was chosen by the Spanish Cortes in 1870 after the 1868 Revolution ("La Gloriosa"), which deposed Queen Isabella II. General Juan Prim promoted his candidacy as the solution for a democratic and constitutional monarchy. A few days before Amadeo’s arrival in Spain, General Prim was assassinated in Madrid, leaving him without his main political advocate from the outset. Overwhelmed by political misrule and the conflict among Artillery officers, Amadeo I abdicated the throne of Spain on February 11, 1873. In his famous abdication message to the Cortes, he described the Spaniards as “indomitable” and ungovernable. His departure immediately paved the way for the proclamation of the First Spanish Republic. A precious piece for collectors and the history of Spain. Original from the period.
