She later settled at Yaga Yaga with her husband, the renowned painter Sunfly Tjampitjin, and together they began painting in the mid-1980s. Following his passing, Napangardi moved to the Balgo Hills community, where she was recognised as a senior law woman and cultural authority. In this work, Napangardi depicts the country of Pulkabardu, located south of Yagga in the Great Sandy Desert. The long central shape is Pulkabardu soakwater, created by the Wati Kutjarra, two mythical ancestors who travelled through this area in the Tjukurrpa, creating features as they went. The shapes surrounding the soakwater are plama, or hills, in which Wati Kutjarra made caves where they stayed while hunting for snakes in the area. These soakwater and hills are not only features of the physical landscape but also hold ecological and spiritual significance. The sandhill crevices are rich with edible plants and bush foods, vital sources of nourishment in desert life. This painting is an assured expression of Warlpiri women's relationship to Ngurra (Country), affirming the importance of water, food, and ancestral connection in sustaining both physical and cultural survival. © BAI BAI NAPANGARDI / Copyright Agency, 2026
