Working with natural ochres on stringybark, he developed a highly refined use of rarrk, or cross-hatching, transforming ancestral designs into complex and layered compositions that articulate Kuninjku cosmology and the power of Mardayin. He began painting in the late 1970s through Maningrida Arts and quickly became a leading figure in contemporary practice. His contribution to the Musée du quai Branly commission in Paris brought international recognition. In 2010 he was awarded Member of the Order of Australia, and his major retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Sydney in 2018, I Am the Old and the New, explored the continuity between inherited knowledge and contemporary expression. © JOHN MAWURNDJUL / Copyright Agency, 2026
