Alle Auktionen / Möbel, Design und Spiegel / Baroque Crucifix - Wood - 1650-1700 - Original polychromy

Fascinating ancient polychrome wooden sculpture depicting the body of Jesus Christ crucified, datable to the end of the 17th century to the beginning of the 18th century. The work effectively testifies to the stylistic transition from the late Baroque to the full 18th century in the realm of devotional sculpture and Italian sacred art. The piece stands out for the remarkable expressive intensity of the face, inclined toward the right shoulder, and for an anatomy of the torso that is dry and well defined, with a swollen rib and a contracted abdomen that heighten the dramatic pathos. Of excellent plastic vigor is the drapery of the loincloth, characterized by deep, moving folds and a conspicuous lateral knot typical of the period. The figure measures 30 cm in total length, an important dimension that gives the piece considerable stage presence, ideal for collectors or lovers of high era. Condition Report: • Structure: The artifact is structurally intact with the original extremities. Holes are present on the palms and feet for the ancient housing of the nails. • Surface and Polychromy: The object is in its original patina and free from subsequent restorations. The original polychromy shows diffuse and natural signs of time, with losses of the painted layer and of the gypsum preparatory layer (clearly visible historical craquelure) that allow a glimpse of the wood beneath, a clear testament to its era. It is sold without the original cross support.
