A bridal cup is a drinking cup that is used or served at weddings. In different countries there are or were cups in use that are called bridal cups. In the Netherlands the so-called stortebeker was used in the 16th and 17th centuries as a wedding gift and at weddings. This stortebeker stems as a phenomenon from Germany (around the second half of the 16th century) but outside Germany and the Netherlands it was also used in England. This drinking vessel was a double cup, made of silver, with a large cup and a smaller cup. The large cup often took the form of a woman with a wide skirt. The trick was to drink from both cups as a pair without spilling. Very few of the original cups have survived. In 1827 a number were made in London as copies of the specimen that stood in the Londonderry Vintners Hall. Later in the 19th century this type of cup also again became popular in Germany and the Netherlands.
