Belgio / Paesi Bassi - Fleurus; Nicolas de Fer (1646 –...

Important and fascinating historic-military map of the famous Battle of Fleurus, entitled "Bataille de Fleurus ou l'avantage l'uy remportée sur l'armée des Confederes par celle du Roy...", created by the royal French geographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720) and published in Paris in 1715. The plate details the clash that occurred on July 1, 1690 within the framework of the War of the Grand Alliance, in which the French troops led by Marshal Luxembourg defeated the Anglo-Dutch and imperial allied forces. The copper engraving shows with strict topographic accuracy the deployment and disposition of the two armies on the battlefield, the movements of infantry and cavalry battalions (represented by dense rows of icon tents and troops), the surrounding villages such as Fleurus, Ligny, Wagnée, Saint-Amand, the fortified city of Charleroi (indicated at the bottom as “Char Le Roy”) and the winding course of the Sambre and Orme rivers. At the top right stands an elegant, asymmetrical drapery-shaped cartouche bearing the title, the historical context of the clash, and the author's publication notes from his famous Paris workshop on the Quai de l’Horloge (“A la Sphere Royale”). At the bottom left complete the composition a finely engraved compass rose and the graphic scale. This map is part of the renowned historical-geographical collections of De Fer, specifically the Atlas Curieux and Les Forces de l'Europe. The specimen is presented in excellent overall condition, with crisp inking, a clean line, and ample original margins, ideal for collectors of baroque military cartography and historians of the Flanders region. The map is sold accompanied by a descriptive table of text only. Dimensions 26 x 42 cm It will be shipped by courier.
