Belgio / Paesi Bassi - Veurne; Nicolas de Fer (1646 –...

Detailed and fascinating chorographic and topographic map of the historic castellany of Veurne (Furnes), located in Belgian West Flanders, titled "Carte de la Chastellenie de Furnes Compris les Huit Paroisses...". The work was originally drawn by the royal French geographer Nicolas de Fer (1646–1720) in 1704 and later reissued by his editorial successor Jean-Baptiste Benard (active in the first half of the 18th century), as indicated in the typographic cartouche ("Chez J.F. Benard Gendre de M. de Fer..."). The plate illustrates with extreme accuracy the complex hydrographic and road network of the Flemish district, highlighting dense artificial canals, sluices, marsh areas and the borders with the neighboring territories of Bergues-Saint-Winoc, Ypres and the Bruges territory. The map also shows the layout of villages, woods and rural parishes, extending north to the coast washed by the North Sea ("La Mer Oceane"). In the upper left, the work is enriched by an elegant Baroque cartouche in the shape of a drapery banner surmounted by a decorative wind rose, while in the lower right the graphical scale expressed in leagues of France and of Flanders is placed. This copper engraving is part of De Fer’s fortunate georeferenced series, the Atlas Curieux and Les Forces de l'Europe. The specimen is presented in excellent overall condition, with strong, sharp inking, wide original margins and fresh, intact period paper, representing an ideal collectible for lovers of historical and military cartography of Flanders. Dimensions 26 x 41 cm Will be shipped by courier.
