Bell shrine - Bronze, Steel - 1761-1837 - Robert Dubois at Le Puy

The bells engraved with the inscription Dubois Robert Au Puy are historical pieces of popularized art highly sought after by collectors. These are those of Louis Gabriel Dubois (1761–1837), a master founder from a vast campanology dynasty active at Le Puy-en-Velay from the 17th to the 19th century. The origin of the mark, following his marriage to Marguerite Robert in 1789, Louis Gabriel chose to associate his wife's name within it to sign his creations. Thus the famous maker's mark "Dubois Robert Aupuy" was born. The final Y is slightly inclined, which is a common hallmark on his molds. This bell is made of bell bronze with the master founder's signature molded and engraved in relief in the mass; some bells have their original metal supports like this one, today specimens are preserved in museums or listed as historic monuments. The horizontal lines at the bottom, typical of the era, break the monotony of the bronze. The bail and the upper mounting of the handle are crossed by a wrought iron rod fixed by an ancient nut. The bell has oxidized with time, as has the interior—the clapper is a remarkable piece. The body shows a rough, dark surface covered with an old patina; no traces of modern grinding are visible. The surface displays small irregularities typical of sand casting from the period, proving once again an artisanal manufacture of the early 19th century, quite normal and logical for an object over 200 years old.
