Alle Auktionen / Kunst und Drucke / Benjamin Rush Signed 1810 Penn Medical Diploma

Exceptional University of Pennsylvania Doctor of Medicine diploma awarded to Joseph B. Stuart in Philadelphia in April 1810, prominently signed by Benjamin Rush, Founding Father, signer of the Declaration of Independence, and one of the most important physicians in early American history. Rush signatures on substantial documents of this quality and visual presence are particularly noteworthy. The oversized vellum diploma is beautifully executed with elaborate period calligraphy and, remarkably, retains its large original pendant University of Pennsylvania seal with blue ribbon intact. It is additionally signed by an extraordinary group of early American physicians including Caspar Wistar, Philip Syng Physick, Benjamin Smith Barton, John Redman Coxe, Thomas C. James, John Syng Dorsey, and others. Penn's medical school was the first established in the American colonies, and this diploma brings together many of the leading figures from the formative period of American medicine. An exceptional early American document distinguished by its impressive size and quality, ornate presentation, intact seal and ribbon, numerous important medical signatures, and especially the scarce signature of Benjamin Rush. Expected age-related folds, toning, staining and wear. Estimate $4,000 - $6,000
