BERTRANDI (Nicolas). The Customs of the People of Toulouse and Other Nearby Nations. First written in Latin by the learned and erudite Master Nicolas Bertrandi, a highly eloquent attorney at the Parliament of Toulouse, and subsequently translated into French. Also, The Royal Ordinances of the region of Languedoc, likewise in the French language. Lyon, Olivier Arnoullet (for Antoine Le Blanc, bookseller in Toulouse), 1517. In-4 (243 x 172 mm), green Jansenist morocco, ribbed spine with gilt title, inner half-back decorated with blind-stamped fillets, gilt edges (late 19th-century English binding). First edition in French, printed in long-line Gothic type, much rarer than the original Latin edition of 1515, from which it is partially derived. This chronicle, written by Nicolas Bertrandi, a lawyer at the Parliament of Toulouse, constitutes the first printed history of the city. Large engraved coat of arms of the city of Toulouse on the title page and 28 woodcut illustrations in the text, some of which are repeated. A fine copy, with particularly wide margins and unbleached paper. It is complete with the second part, *Ordonnances de Languedoc*, which is missing from many copies. This section begins with the coat of arms of France framed by four vignettes. Minor restoration at the top of the title page and the privilege page, without affecting the text. Spine burnished. Acquired by Émile Rossignol in 1946.
