Antique Silver Chatelaine Powder Compact – Guilloché Engraving – Gilt Interior – French Import Hallmarks – Circa 1880-1900 An elegant antique silver chatelaine powder compact, dating from the late 19th to early 20th century, beautifully decorated with intricate guilloché-style engraving and fitted with a richly gilded interior. This charming and finely crafted accessory reflects the elegance and refinement of the Belle Époque period. Decoration and craftsmanship The rectangular silver case features an exceptionally detailed engraved surface, with a central panel of closely arranged geometric wave-like patterns, surrounded by a delicate border of stylised foliage and small floral rosettes at each corner. The combination of geometric precision and classical floral ornamentation gives the piece a particularly refined appearance. A substantial suspension ring allows the compact to be attached to a chatelaine, chain or belt accessory. Interior and original use The compact opens to reveal a fitted mirror and a beautifully gilded interior, designed to hold face powder. An additional hinged circular compartment, also gilded, features a small dark blue cabochon-like push-button detail. The gilding protected the silver interior and provided an elegant finish. Such miniature powder compacts were fashionable personal accessories, allowing ladies to discreetly refresh their appearance while travelling, attending social gatherings or visiting the theatre. Silver hallmarks The compact bears several marks, including: 900 – indicating a silver fineness of 900/1000. An oval maker's mark containing initials, not yet conclusively identified. Two small French import hallmarks, apparently depicting the charançon (weevil), associated with the French system of marking imported precious-metal objects. The circular inner compartment is also marked. These hallmarks suggest an imported silver object that passed through the French hallmarking system. Condition Good antique condition, with light surface scratches, minor signs of wear and natural patina consistent with age and use.
