Bral Meccano Fratelli Braglia - Tin toy - Bral Costruttore Meccanico n

Meccano BRAL set no. 8 from the 1960s-70s. As is well known, BRAL Il Costruttore Meccanico was the most complete and best-made Italian competitor to Meccano Ltd Liverpool. Bral was born in Milan by Roberto Braglia as early as 1902 and specialized in tin toys. In 1935 his son Arnaldo took over and production diversified into spring and electric gauge 0 model trains and aircraft models. Bral is clearly a clone of Meccano, with the advantage of costing less, if nothing else due to lower transport/import costs; all the pieces are copied from Meccano, of which they also retain numbering (some also draw on Marklin Baukasten types, e.g., the perforated wheels with slotted profile nn.66 and 67 or the design of shelf No. 108), and yet the parts are very well made, some almost superior to the English parts (for example the chain No. 94) and the green, red and blue paint finish is excellent. The zinc/plating of strips and angle pieces and the material of the gears appear somewhat poorer, with a sort of alloy tending slightly toward iridescence. Many gears are branded Bral embossed, unlike Meccano which was branded with engraving. The tires are excellent. Some rare parts are of original design, such as the railings Nos. 99 and 100 and the propellers Nos. 41 and 41a. Conversely, the entire Bral production totally lacks the enormous Meccano pieces, such as 167, 168, 145, 143, 118, 146 and the specific railway parts 120, 121, 149, 158. Compatibility with Meccano is total, being all based on the half-inch module, and even nuts and bolts have English threads. Regarding packaging: the box is wooden with six compartments, sturdy but rather rough plywood, not treated in any way. There is no trace of the handles and lock with key that Meccano sets had, whose wood was a more precious and finished oak (with dovetail joints). The pieces are fixed to yellow cards by clips. (Meccano at least until 1961 still tied individual pieces with the green and red cords). This set No. 8 from the 1960s/70s is complete. The wooden box is in excellent condition. And all the yellow perforated cards and all the fixing clips are present as well. All the special pieces are present, such as the triple eccentric, the universal joints, the two chains, the propellers, etc. Only some of the more common parts (e.g., strips and angles) that were missing have been replaced by similar Meccano products with the same finish and code. In conclusion, it is a set suitable for Builders who require undistorted pieces in excellent/good condition, but also for Meccano collectors who want to enhance their collection with a good piece from a historic Italian company. The instruction manual for No. 7 is present, integrated with some color sheets showing models from set No. 8. The box measures 46 x 36 x 16 cm and weighs 11.00 kg without packaging. Therefore overseas shipping costs are not negligible.
