Brooch - 18 kt. Yellow gold, Silver - 6.00ct. tw. Diamond (Natural)

A stunning museum-quality investment piece from the French Napoleon III period (Second Empire, circa 1852–1870). This exceptional, transformable large brooch (*devant-de-corsage* or necklace/torque piece) is an extraordinary example of goldsmithing for the high nobility; the piece is masterfully inlaid with an impressive array of antique rose-cut diamonds that together present a visual spread estimated at about 5.5 to 6.5 carats. The balanced, symmetrical openwork design is anchored by a powerful central triptych: a large, oval rose-cut diamond in the middle, flanked by two substantial, matching rose-cut diamonds in pear- or oval form. This core is surrounded by a refined, two-layer openwork mount lavishly set with dozens of smaller rose-cut diamonds of varying sizes. Movable hanging elements at the top and bottom complete this princely, imperial silhouette. In keeping with the strict traditions of the elite during the Second French Empire, the upper portions of the settings are meticulously handcrafted from high-quality silver; this complements the ethereal, white brilliance of the rose-cut stones and creates a dramatic contrast with the historic, dark patina. The structural base and the secure pin mechanism are executed in solid 18-karat yellow gold. The gold pin bears the official French 'Hibou' (owl) hallmark, guaranteeing the authenticity of the 18-karat (750) gold. The diamonds are set in closed settings with foil backing—a historic technique specifically intended to showcase their soft, enchanting, and mysterious sparkle to best effect in candlelight.
