These interiors sketch the mental world of those who are on the road: their traditions, their aspirations, their personalities. They are no longer simply migrants, but a trader, a young adult barely out of childhood, or a mystic artist. In front of the photographer's lens, the “migrants” or “refugees” – generic terms that make us lose sight of their identity – are no longer silhouettes walking in the mud among the tents, but faces that look back at us... Most of all, these photographs reveal the astonishing capacity of human beings, whether nomadic or sedentary, to inhabit the place where they live, even for a short time, even a shack or a tent in Calais. Bruno Fert — Documentary photographer Bruno Fert develops a deeply humanist body of work devoted to exile, to migrations and to the territories traversed. From vanished Palestinian villages to the precarious refuges of migrants, he photographs less the event than its traces. With Passages, he continues this work along the roads of exile, revealing in the landscapes the marks left by those who try to reach Europe.
