Bruno Reinbacher (1913–1993) – 11 Expressionist Paintings – Closed Collection from Family Estate Description of the Collection For sale is an extraordinary collection of eleven paintings, kept within the family for many years and attributed to the German painter Bruno Reinbacher (1913–1993). The works come from a family inheritance, which is now being dissolved with heavy hearts. The paintings have been preserved as a cohesive group and are offered exclusively as a complete lot. Individual sales are not planned. The collection includes striking portraits of people, figurative works, atmospheric landscapes, and compositions leaning toward abstraction. It provides a versatile impression of the expressive and socially critical visual language of the artist. About the artist Bruno Reinbacher (1913–1993) was a German painter who, after his artistic training in Königsberg, lived and worked in Wiesbaden from 1948 onward. He studied at the Königsberg Academy of Fine Arts, among others with Eduard Bischoff and Alfred Partikel, and was a master student of Franz Marten. In 1965 he was among the co-founders of the Wiesbaden artists’ association “gruppe real,” which focused in particular on representational and socially engaged art. His works deal with human life circumstances, social tensions, transience, and the effects of human action on the environment. Characteristic are expressive distortions, intense color contrasts, distinctive brushwork, and a often somber, psychologically penetrating visual language. The works can be stylistically placed in the milieu of expressive realism, postwar German figurative art, and socially critical painting. They show touchpoints with Expressionism and the New Objectivity at times. The eleven paintings in detail All dimensions are given in height × width. 1. Bearded man with cap – 59.5 × 49 cm Expressive portrait of a man with distinctive facial features, beard, and dark head covering. The rough, multilayered painting technique gives the depiction an intense character. 2. Portrait of a woman – 57 × 42 cm Expressive female portrait with melancholic facial expression. The unsettled color structures and dark eye area create a strong psychological effect. 3. Portrait with light head covering – 60 × 50 cm Gloomy portrait of a person with a light head covering against a reddish-brown background. The strong contrasts emphasize the serious character of the depiction. 4. Lying woman with reddish hair – 80 × 60 cm Expressive figurative composition with a lying or slumped woman. Her closed eyes and the body posture convey vulnerability and emotional tension. 5. Abstract-leaning landscape in violet and red – 60 × 80 cm Powerful composition with pronounced color contrasts, multilayered structures, and a tense interplay between figurative and abstract forms. 6. Landscape with white house – 58 × 100.5 cm Expansive landscape with a small white building, dark foreground, and yellow-green sky. The composition conveys a quiet, melancholic atmosphere. 7. Landscape with a technical wreck – 58.5 × 98.5 cm Dark landscape depiction with a vehicle or machine wreck. The motif can be interpreted as a confrontation with technology, transience, and human impact on the environment. 8. Standing young man – 81 × 60.5 cm Figurative portrayal of a young man in a white shirt and a red garment. The serious expression, posture, and emphasized hands give the work a special expressive force. 9. “Guilt is always doubtful” – 100 × 75 cm Large-format, socially critical portrait of a highly distorted human figure. The dark coloring and handwritten inscription on the image give the work an existential and contemplative effect. 10. Portrait of a man with black head covering – 100 × 75 cm Large, expressive portrait with a striking black head covering over yellow, red, and gray color fields. The angular facial design and strong contrasts create a tension-filled visual impact. 11. Interior scene with people – 82 × 103.5 cm Large interior depiction with tables, chairs, and slumped figures. The subdued color scheme and the posture of the people convey an atmosphere of fatigue, loneliness, and human isolation. Technique and materials The eleven paintings were presumably executed in oil or mixed media on hardboard. The sturdy supports sometimes bear the characteristic fine-textured reverse side of older fiberboard. The works show different painting approaches, from broad, free brushwork to pronounced impasto, relief-like color applications. The exact composition of colors and supports has not been subject to a technical examination. Signatures All eleven works are, according to the owner, signed with the artist’s monogram “B.R.” The monograms are located at different places on the image field depending on the work. On the back of one painting there is also a handwritten name designation “Bruno Reinbacher.” The signatures are documented in the accompanying photographs. Dating The paintings presumably date from the second half of the 20th century and are attributed to the artist’s period. The individual works may have been created at different times. A secured dating of all paintings is not currently available. Provenance Family possession, acquired by inheritance. The eleven paintings were preserved within the family as a cohesive art collection. The collection is now being dissolved with heavy hearts. Since the works have remained together so far, they should continue to be passed on as a complete ensemble. Condition Upon external inspection, the paintings are in a generally decent condition for their age. There are some age- and storage-related signs of wear, minor edge faults, and surface irregularities. The pronounced impasto and the sometimes coarse color structures are part of the artistic design and are not to be interpreted as damage. No professional restorer’s assessment has been conducted. The accompanying photographs are part of the condition report. Sale and handover The entire collection will be sold exclusively as a closed set of eleven paintings. Individual sale is excluded. Due to the number, varying formats, and the partly large fiberboard supports, careful packing or an appropriate transport solution is required. Location of the collection: Wiesbaden, Germany. Final note This collection offers not only a diverse group of expressive paintings but also an ensemble that has been preserved within a family for years. The different motives—from the striking human portrait to socially critical representations to expressive landscapes—provide a varied insight into the artist Bruno Reinbacher’s visual language. Our wish is that this collection remains intact and finds a new home with people who appreciate its artistic and personal history.
