C. Cornelius Tacitus - C. Cornelii Taciti - 1684

Tacitus — C. Corn. Tacitus from the edition by Justus Lipsius — Lyon, Antoine Molin, 1684 — Remarkable miniature edition in Latin — 621 pages — Contemporary binding Precious Lyonese edition of the 17th century of the works of the Roman historian Caius Cornelius Tacitus, published in 1684 in a remarkable miniature format of only 11 × 6 cm. The work presents Tacitus’ text established according to the famous edition by the humanist Justus Lipsius, enriched by the scholars and historian Johannes Isaac Pontanus, as well as by the work of other commentators. Full title C. Corn. Tacitus ex recensione Justi Lipsii; nec non I. Isaci Pontani post Lipsium aliosque. Lugduni — Lyon — at the expense of Antoine Molin, near the College, 1684 : Lugduni, Sumpt. Antonii Molin, è regione Collegii. M.DC.LXXXIV. Cum permissu. Bibliographic description * Author: Caius Cornelius Tacitus — Tacitus * Scientific editors: Justus Lipsius — Juste Lipse — and Johannes Isaac Pontanus * Place of edition: Lyon — Lugduni * Printer-bookbinder: Antoine Molin * Date: 1684 * Language: Latin * Miniature format: about 11 × 6 cm * Pagination: 621 pages * Binding: full brown antique sheepskin, apparently contemporary * Printing in small Roman and italic type * Fine typographic mark with an eagle on the title page * Headbands and typographic ornaments A remarkable miniature edition The format is one of the major attractions of this copy. Despite its 621 pages, the work measures only 11 × 6 cm: a true 17th‑century pocket edition, designed to allow a scholarly reader to carry Tacitus’ works. The creation of such an important text in such a reduced format testifies to the mastery of Lyon printers of that era. The typography remains fine, regular, and perfectly legible. Tacitus, great historian of Imperial Rome Tacitus, born around 55 and died around 120 AD, is regarded as one of the most important historians of Ancient Rome. A senator, orator, and privileged witness to imperial power, he offers a particularly deep analysis of political mechanisms, corruption, succession struggles, plots, wars, and the relations between emperors and the Senate. The work notably includes the Annals, whose first book opens after the death of Emperor Augustus and recounts the accession of Tiberius. The volume also gathers Tacitus’ other major historical texts, accompanied by critical and editorial notes. His oeuvre remains a essential source for understanding Imperial Rome and the reigns of Augustus, Tiberius, Claudius, Nero and their successors today. An edition established by Justus Lipsius This edition is particularly interesting because it reproduces Justus Lipsius’ recension — Iustus Lipsius, 1547-1606, a renowned philologist and humanist from the Low Countries. Lipsius taught notably at Leiden and Leuven. He devoted a significant portion of his work to establishing and correcting Tacitus’ texts, of which he was one of the Renaissance’s greatest specialists. His critical editions contributed profoundly to the rediscovery and diffusion of Tacitus in the European learned world of the 16th and 17th centuries. The text is also enriched by the work of Johannes Isaac Pontanus — 1571-1639, historian, geographer and philologist of Danish origin, active in the United Provinces. Royal privilege preserved The last page preserves the mention of the printing privilege granted for the King to Antoine Molin: “Je consens pour le Roy qu’il soit permis à Antoine Molin, libraire, de faire imprimer le livre intitulé C. Cornelius Tac. […] À Lyon, le 17 mars 1682.” This authorization is followed by the printing permit dated 7 April 1682 and signed De Sève. The presence of this privilege completes and authenticates the publishing history of this Lyon edition published two years later, in 1684. Binding and condition Old full brown tanned leather binding, presumably contemporary to the edition. Copy showing the usual marks of more than three centuries of existence: * rubbed, patinated leather and marked; * skin creases and small material losses; * worn corners, edges and heads; * small defect at the top of the spine; * cracked hinges and binding showing weaknesses; * flyleaves creased, worn and partially detached; * some stains, browning and handling traces; * small deformations and margin defects; * old paper slightly browned; * text generally still clearly legible. The title page, the beginning of the Annals, and the final privilege are well present. The work comprises 621 pages. The copy is offered in its old condition, with no apparent modern restoration. The numerous photographs allow for precise appreciation of its condition and are an integral part of the description. Bibliophilic interest An especially appealing work, gathering several sought-after qualities: * 17th-century Lyon printing; * date 1684; * major text of Roman history; * edition established from Justus Lipsius and Isaac Pontanus; * Latin language; * old binding; * preserved royal privilege; * 621 pages; * exceptional small format of only 11 × 6 cm. An endearing piece of the library, ideal for a collector of old books, classical authors, Roman history, Lyon prints, or miniature editions. The work will be packed with the greatest care and shipped in a rigid protective packaging.
