State law-wise, al-Andalus successively was a province of the Umayyad Caliphate or the Abbasid Caliphate, founded by Caliph Al-Walid I.; to follow were the Emirate of Córdoba, the Caliphate of Córdoba, and a group of Taifa kingdoms. In the first half of the 13th century large parts—except for the Emirate of Granada—were conquered by the Christian kingdoms. During long periods, especially during the Caliphate of Córdoba, al-Andalus was a center of learning. Córdoba became a leading cultural and economic hub of both the Mediterranean region and the Islamic world. The Almohads were a Muslim Moroccan Berber dynasty that ruled over wide parts of the Maghreb and al-Andalus. The Almohad dynasty was founded in 1121 by Ibn Tumart, who proselytized the Masmuda Berbers of the High Atlas for his faith. It held that only the Quran and the Prophet Muhammad’s tradition were legitimate sources and rejected continuing the decisions of earlier authorities. Under Caliph Abu Yaqub Yusuf I, the realm was further consolidated and, above all in al-Andalus, protected against the Reconquista by the Christian realms. The Almohads continued the architectural style for mosques laid out by the Abbasids. Al-Walid ibn Abd al-Malik succeeded his father Abd al-Malik. During his reign, the Umayyad rule was further consolidated, relying on his father’s trusted governors (including al-Hajjaj). Under Al-Walid the Caliphate reached its greatest extent. Also the completion of the Al-Aqsa Mosque probably falls within his reign. This extensive building activity placed a heavy burden on the population. Merely the construction of the Umayyad Mosque is said to have consumed 5.6 million gold dinars. In al-Andalus, Almohad rule was not initially significantly shaken, though weakened in the long run, following the catastrophic defeat of the young caliph at the Battle of Las Navas de Tolosa against the united Christian kingdoms, and was lost in the following decades.
