Cambridge, Massachusetts. Harvard Bank. 1861 $5. PCGS Currency Fine 15. No. 646. Plate A. Burdened with a title that speaks to one of the most respected names in higher education, bidders are presented here with an evenly circulated $1 Obsolete issued by the Harvard Bank during the 1860s. Originally incorporated in 1861, the Harvard Bank ultimately lingered into the early 1900s as National Bank, but its original title proved short-lived and was discarded upon conversion in 1864. Survivors predating conversion are nonetheless extremely rare and we can trace only a few survivors from a handful of denominations. This particular example does well to demonstrate the prevailing design favored by the bank as a contemporary view of the Harvard Green complements the portrait of Thomas Dowse seen at right who was a noted benefactor of the Massachusetts Historical Society during the 1850s. This institution ultimately became the First National Bank of Cambridge (Charter# 433) in 1864. Estimate: $1,000 - $1,500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Whitman Plate Note.
