Like the Fang of southern Cameroon famous for their large white masks, the Bulu also practiced the Ngil ritual to combat witchcraft and poisonings. Ngi is the gorilla, a formidable animal to which the postulant identifies after being admitted into the secret society. Their monkey statues stand out by shaping round and simple forms, and by a remarkable accuracy in observing the animal’s posture. The Bulu admit that there is a part of their ancestors in the gorilla’s symbolism.
