First edition of this interesting catalog published on the occasion of MystFest, the International Mystery Festival in Cattolica, held from June 23 to July 1, 1989. The volume is edited by Giuseppe Cannilla, Paolo Musu, and Stella Santacaterina, with a preface by Irene Bignardi and an introduction by Jon Thompson. A unique work devoted to fantastic and spectral photography, and more broadly to the relationships between photography, illusion, apparitions, and the imagination. It brings together several essays—*The Spectral Image*, *The Image and the Phantasm*, *The Fantastic in Cinema and Photography*, and *The Philology of the Image*—accompanied by a substantial collection of photographs. The reproduced works include, notably, photographs by Joel-Peter Witkin, Paul Hill, Graham Budgett, Nigel Coke, David Newman, and Jill Stinchcombe, exploring apparitions, the body, blurriness, superimposition, and the ambiguities of photographic reality. The highly unusual photographs reproduced in the book give it a significance that clearly goes beyond that of a simple festival catalog. Good copy. Some slight scuffing and normal wear on the glossy cover, a small mark on the spine; interior is fresh.
