Rev: ΒΑΣΙΛΕΩΣ / ΑΡΙΟΒΑΡΖΑΝΟΥ / ΕΥΣΕΒΟΥΣ ΚΑΙ / ΦΙΛΟΡΩΜΑΙΟΥ. Athena standing front, head to left, holding Nike in her right hand and shield and spear with her left; to inner left, star above crescent; to inner right, monogram; in exergue, Θ (date). Ariobarzanes III ruled Cappadocia amid Rome’s civil wars, bearing the titles Eusebes, “the Pious,” and Philoromaios, “Friend of the Romans.” He supported Pompey against Julius Caesar, but Caesar pardoned him and enlarged his kingdom. His survival depended on navigating rival Roman powers; after Caesar’s assassination, Cassius had him executed in 42 BC, exposing the precarious position of Rome’s allied kings.
