Carl Hans Bernewitz (German, 1858-1934), 'Der Bücherwurm' (The Bookworm); a gilt bronze model of an academic, portrayed in 18th century attire, standing and stooping over a volume held before him; the circular base signed in the maquette and inscribed for the Gladenbeck Berlin foundry; on a turned black marble base; 21cm high overall. Note: Bernewitz studied under August Volz in Riga, later continuing his education at the Berlin Academy under Reinhold Begas from 1883 to 1886. He began teaching at the Art Academy in Kassel in 1903 and was appointed professor five years later. The artist created cabinet bronzes and designs for the Royal Porcelain Manufactory in Berlin.
