Carlini, Belli, Piola, Buzzetti and Majocchi – Miscellany on the solar eclipse of July 8, 1842 – 6 folded plates and 17 newspaper cuttings Collection of pamphlets devoted to the solar eclipse of July 8, 1842, gathered in a single volume with six copper-engraved map plates, frequently folded, numerous astronomical tables in the text, and seventeen newspaper cuttings on the same topic. The distinctive feature of the specimen lies in its composition: a miscellany formed individually, which collects astronomical forecasts, instructions for observation, reports following the event, and press testimonies. The title printed in gold on the spine, “Opuscoli sopra l’ecclisse,” identifies the theme of the entire collection. Works included in the volume • Francesco Carlini, Sopra l’ecclisse solare del giorno 8 luglio 1842, with a note by Giuseppe Belli, Milan, Typographia di Giuseppe Bernardoni: second and third editions, both present. The third edition contains some additional pages and a mention of the partial solar eclipse of 1804. Each of the two editions is accompanied by two folded copper plates. pp 32 + 36 • Francesco Carlini and Gabrio Piola, Sopra l’ecclisse solare totale del giorno 8 luglio 1842. Relazioni, read at the meeting of the Lombard Institute on August 18, 1842, Milan, Typographia di Giuseppe Bernardoni, 1842. pp 37 • The total solar eclipse visible in the morning of July 8, 1842, a report prepared for popular instruction, Milan, at the publisher’s expense, 1842, with a copper-engraved map of northern Italy and a trace of the moon’s shadow. pp 15 • Curzio Buzzetti, Ecclissi totale di sole visibile in gran parte dell’Europa, second edition, Milan, at the author’s expense, 1842, with a map of Europe. pp 13 • Prof. Majocchi, Instructions for observing the eclipse that will occur on July 8, 1842, article extracted from the Annali di fisica, fascicle XVI, 1842, Milan, Tipografia Guglielmini e Redaelli. pp 27 Plates and tables The six folded plates depict the path of the Moon’s shadow across Europe and northern Italy, indicating the band of totality, the central line, and the shadow’s limits. The map of northern Italy also includes an explanatory diagram with the Sun, Moon, and Earth. The tables in the text provide start times, maximum obscuration, and end times of the eclipse for numerous cities, the magnitudes of the phases, geographic coordinates, and calculations related to the movement of the Moon’s shadow. There is also a projection of future eclipses up to 1900. Seventeen newspaper cuttings added at the end The final section preserves articles devoted to the eclipse announcement, observations made, and the discussions that followed. It includes scientific reports, meteorological and atmospheric electricity observations, guidance for studying plant behavior, a poetic composition, and comments on the impressions aroused by the event. Among the photographed texts is a description of the instruments prepared at the Liceo di S. Alessandro in Milan, which also mentions daguerreotype apparatus by Alessandro Duroni and bromide paper. These inserts give the miscellany an additional documentary value, pairing the standalone publications with press testimonies. Hard cover with boards coated in marbled paper in red and black tones; spine in dark leather with gold-tooled title, rules, and decorations. Overall condition very good. The photographs are an integral part of the description.
