Censer - Bronze

This ancient Asian bronze censer (censer / koro) is a superb example of high-quality metalwork from the late nineteenth century. The rectangular model with elegantly rounded corners was crafted in Japan during the thriving Meiji period (1868–1912). The Japanese bronze caster clearly drew inspiration for this design from the ceremonial, ritual fangding vessels of the early Chinese dynasties. This eclectic character is perfectly expressed in the detailed decoration around the exterior. The vessel is composed of three horizontal decorative zones, with the upper edge adorned with finely cast floral motifs and scrollwork, transitioning into a central band with downward-facing shields (lappets) in which spiral patterns are incorporated. The entire body rests on four sturdy, short feet, plastically formed as three-dimensional lion heads or demon masks. The piece testifies to a heavy and solid casting quality, which is immediately perceptible in its substantial weight of 635 grams, given its compact dimensions of 8.6 cm in height, 10.5 cm in width, and 9.3 cm in depth. The bronze possesses an authentic, deep, dark-brown to black patina layer on the exterior, which the ravages of time have nicely worn into the prominent sections. On the interior there is a characteristic natural green copper oxidation (verdigris) that underscores the age and historical use of the vessel. The bottom of the censer is completely flat and inconspicuous, with subtle casting marks that point to artisan handiwork. The object is in good, unrestored antique condition with normal signs of aging appropriate for its age. As clearly shown in the photographs, there is a very small hole in the base from intensive historical use. Dimensions: 8.6 x 10.5 x 9.3 cm Weight: 635 g
