CHARLES EDWARD HALLÉ (BRITISH, 1846–1914) THE FOUNTAIN Oil on canvas Signed (lower right) 109 x 45.5cm (42¾ x 17¾in.) Exhibited: New Gallery, 1897, no 143 Literature: The Morning Post, 10 May 1897, p 3 Sir Charles Hallé, pianist and conductor and father of the painter, brought his two year old son, the future artist, to London from Paris fleeing the revolution of 1848. Hallé junior spent much of his young life in Italy. In 1877 he and Joseph Comyns Carr with Sir Coutts Lindsay founded the Grosvenor Gallery, which quickly became the flagship of the Aesthetic Movement. When, in 1887, disputes arose over the running of the Grosvenor, Hallé and Carr withdrew and, with the support of Burne-Jones and others, opened the New Gallery in Regent Street the following year, where Hallé exhibited this typical Aesthetic Movement painting in 1897.
