Alle Auktionen / Kunst und Drucke / Charles Hinman (American, 1932-2026), Title Unknown

Acrylic on shaped canvas, unsigned, circa 1960s. 34 x 78 in. Private Collection, Raleigh, North Carolina Acquired by the consignor from the artist, a close personal friend. Charles Hinman was a pioneering abstract artist celebrated for his innovative shaped canvases that challenged traditional distinctions between painting and sculpture. Born in Syracuse, New York, he earned his BFA from Syracuse University in 1955 and continued his studies at the Art Students League of New York. During the 1960s, Hinman became associated with the emerging Minimalist movement, developing three-dimensional canvases that explored the interplay of color, light, shadow, and geometric form. His work gained early recognition through exhibitions at the Sidney Janis Gallery and Richard Feigen Gallery in New York. Hinman maintained ties to North Carolina, exhibiting at North Carolina State University's Visual Arts Center in Raleigh and participating in exhibitions at the university's museum during the 1980s. He died in Raleigh in May 2026 at the age of 93. His work is represented in major institutional collections, including the Museum of Modern Art, the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, and the Los Angeles County Museum of Art. Some minor grime to shaped edges of canvas; stable framing.
