Lot of three nineteenth-century Italian volumes/pamphlets of literary, religious, and political-historical interest. 1. François-René de Chateaubriand Les Martyrs or the Triumph of Christian Religion Vol. I and II (united in a single volume). Milan, F. Pagnoni Publisher, 1915 edition. Illustrated Italian edition with beautiful engravings (martyrdom scenes, landscapes, romantic figures). Blue cloth or dark blue leather binding with gold titles and ornaments on the spine ("I MARTIRI DEL CRISTIANESIMO 1-2"). Romantic epic prose (original French Les Martyrs, 1809) that celebrates the triumph of Christianity over Roman persecutions through the lives of characters such as Eudorus and Cymodocée. A masterpiece of Catholic Romanticism, foundational for the revival of religious sentiment in European 19th-century literature. Milan edition, sought after for its illustrations and typography quality. A work of great literary prestige, still studied today as a foundational text of Catholic Romanticism. 2. Giuseppe Frassinetti Catechism of Dogmatics Sixth edition with additions and corrections. Genoa, Typografia della Gioventù at the Artigianelli, 1865. Contemporary half-leather or dark cloth binding with titles on the spine. Systematic treatise of Catholic dogmatic theology (sources of revelation, God one and three, creation, Incarnation, sacraments, etc.), written in a question-and-answer form. An educational work of wide success, intended for clergy and educated laypeople. Frassinetti (1803-1868), a Genoese priest highly regarded, saw his editions quickly go out of print; this sixth edition of 1865 testifies to the work’s popularity, later translated into English as well. A well-preserved specimen, typical of high-quality 19th-century religious publishing. 3. Pietro C. Ulloa (Pietro Calà Ulloa, Marquis of Favale and Rotondella) Unity and not the Unification of Italy Second Italian edition. Rome, Typografia dei Fratelli Monaldi, 1867. Pamphlet with a typographic frame. Political-historical essay in which the author, the last Prime Minister of the Kingdom of the Two Sicilies (exile government in Rome under Francis II), argues for the need of a federation of Italian states rather than the unitary unification imposed by Piedmont. Harsh critique of the Risorgimento and defense of Bourbon and southern legitimate interests. A document of primary importance for the historiography of the Risorgimento and for southern legality. Pietro Calà Ulloa (1801-1879) is a prominent figure in Neapolitan politics; his exile pamphlets in Rome are rather rare on the antiquarian market and sought after by collectors of Italian history and of the Mezzogiorno. Interesting, coherent set from mid-19th to early 20th century that unites high-level Romantic literature, Catholic theology, and political polemics contemporary with the events of Italian Unification. The three items show typical signs of use and foxing of the era, but remain solid and complete. The particularly notable presence is the illustrated edition of Les Martyrs and Ulloa’s pamphlet, the latter being unusually hard to find. Ideal for collectors of old Italian books, Risorgimento history, Romantic literature, and 19th-century religiosity.
