Elusive Indian Territory Brown Back Chickasha, Indian Territory. $10 1882 Brown Back. Fr. 490. First NB. Charter #5431. PMG Very Fine 25. A treasure from what is now Oklahoma. This Series of 1882 $10 Brown Back represents one of a multitude of rare, but well-collected banks spread across Indian Territory which eventually became much of Eastern Oklahoma after statehood was gained in 1907. Issued by the First National Bank of Chickasha (Charter# 5431) in the years that immediately preceded statehood as evidenced by the serial number font and overprinted regional indicator, this example is one only just five Territorials recorded on this institution out of an overall population of 79 non-institutional pieces. Here distinct signatures attributable to Cashier Benjamin Franklin Johnson and President Henry Belton Johnson are retained alongside a decidedly original impression of the Treasury overprint. This pairing does nonetheless speak to a truly exceptional contrast against the vignettes known as Franklin and Electricity and America Seizing the Lighting which should make this a first-rate addition for the collector looking to build an exceptional collection of Nationals on the political entities that ultimately became Oklahoma.
