Exalted Near-Gem "Short Spine and Cloud" Dollar from Chihli CHINA. Chihli (Pei Yang). 7 Mace 2 Candareens (Dollar), Year 34 (1908). Tientsin Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). NGC MS-64. L&M-465A; cf. K-209 (for type); KM-Y-73.3; WS-0643. Frozen date issue with plain 4. Variety with short middle tail spine and with short cloud. Tied with just two others for the top spot in the NGC census, this RARE variant and highly vibrant "frozen date" issue from the end of imperial China displays a high degree of lustrous brilliance along with a sharp strike. So elevated is the level of preservation that the original end of the middle tail spine and the cloud to the right of the left upper claw can still faintly be seen--both having been previously shortened due to die polishing. Estimate: $8,000 - $12,000. Click here for certification details from NGC.
