CHINA. Kiangnan. 3 Mace 6 Candareens (50 Cents), CD (1900). Nanking

Exceedingly Rare Kiangnan Minor with a Doubled Die CHINA. Kiangnan. 3 Mace 6 Candareens (50 Cents), CD (1900). Nanking Mint. Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS AU-50. L&M-232; K-82; KM-Y-144A; WS-0820; Wenchao-668 (rarity: ★★★). Doubled die dragon side. A stunning and important RARITY from an emission that has seen just a small handful trade in recent decades, this example, like all of its observed brethren, displays rather clear doubling upon the dragon side. For the denomination, Eduard Kann notes that "...the 1/2-$ coin from Nanking is met with in small numbers and is found in 3 series only, as this denomination proved at no time popular in the Nanking-Shanghai districts. Therefore, the 50-cents piece marked KIANGNAN is rare, especially the issue of 1899." In the Catalogue of the Collection of Chinese Exhibits at the Louisiana Purchase Exposition, St. Louis 1904, it states that, "...of the half dollar pieces only a few were coined, and they never got into general circulation, but were taken up privately." Thus it would seem that the Kiangnan Half Dollars were simply not minted in any kind of significant number and, while it is doubtful that all of the minted pieces were tucked away by collectors, their use in general circulation was certainly very limited. Superior by a two grading levels when compared to the last example of the type that we offered, a PCGS EF-40 in our April 2025 Hong Kong Auction, which realized a total of $115,900 (Lot # 40049). Estimate: $75,000 - $125,000. Provenance: From the MC Collection (陳氏家族集藏). To view all items from the MC Collection (陳氏家族集藏), click here. Click here for certification details from PCGS.
