Acquirable "Seven Three Reversed" Pattern Dollar CHINA. Kwangtung. 7 Mace 3 Candereens (Dollar), ND (1889). Kwangtung Mint (struck from Heaton Mint dies). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS Genuine--Tooled, EF Details. L&M-123; K-16; KM-Y-198; WS-0931; Wenchao-552 (rarity: ★★★★). An EXCEPTIONAL RARITY that emanates from the initial output from Kwangtung, this crown, slightly heavier than those that would follow by a single Candareen in a failed attempt to drive out lesser-weight foreign coins, also displays a design that proved rather unpopular with the populace. The pairing of the English legends with that of the Chinese was off-putting, leading not only to the dropping in weight, but also the swapping of the English legends to the dragon side. As such, the name for this type has become known as the "Seven Three Reversed Pattern." Though exhibiting some moderate wear and obvious tooling in the fields, it nevertheless offers a great opportunity for the collector long-seeking an example of a type often occupying the financial stratosphere in terms of acquisition. The name of this exceedingly elusive and important series emanates from the fact that the unit, or Dollar, was issued to the weight of 7 Mace 3 Candareens, rather than the weight that would quickly supplant it, that of the much more common 7 and 2. The "reversed" nature of the name comes from the fact that the outer legend on the dragon side was composed solely of Chinese characters, leaving the characters side--that bearing the name of the emperor at the center--surrounded entirely by English legends. This aspect was found unsuitable, causing not just a departure from the weight standard, but the overall composition of the design as well. Estimate: $20,000 - $40,000.
