Extremely Rare "Hu Poo" Pattern 5 Mace CHINA. Silver 5 Mace Pattern, Year 29 (1903). Tientsin Mint (struck from Osaka Mint Dies). Kuang-hsu (Guangxu). PCGS SPECIMEN-55. L&M-2; K-928; KM-Pn294; WS-0017; Wenchao-80 (rarity: ★★★). Part of one of the RAREST of imperial pattern series, this issue emanates from a grouping intended to be an early attempt to have a unified Ch'ing currency. The present example offers an appearance that, upon first glance, seems to be without any real wear, though a much closer examination reveals the slightest degree of wear only upon the highest of points. The fields, meanwhile, are awash in lustrous brilliance, while the surfaces overall yield gunmetal gray further accented by an electrified canary aspect. Estimate: $50,000 - $75,000.
