Wrapped Reichstag – Berlin, 1995 The wrapping project for the Reichstag was conceived by Christo and Jeanne-Claude in the 1970s and required more than two decades of preparation and negotiations before realization. In June 1995, the historic Reichstag building in Berlin was completely transformed by the artists’ intervention. About 100,000 m² of silver polypropylene fabric were used, held in place by nearly 15 kilometers of blue rope. The installation mobilized dozens of professional climbers and more than a hundred workers. The completed installation was open to the public for about two weeks, drawing several million visitors and becoming one of Christo and Jeanne-Claude’s most notable temporary works. The silver fabric followed the building’s volumes and architectural details, radically altering its appearance. Depending on light and weather, the fabric’s folds continually changed the perception of the building. Like most of the couple’s large projects, Wrapped Reichstag was intentionally ephemeral: after only a few weeks, the installation was fully dismantled.
