Property from the Murphy Family Estate Collection, Savannah, GA Description: Christopher Murphy Jr. (Sav, 1902-1973), 4 Savannah Coastal Etchings, comprising initial signed panoramic landscape etching with oak tree (good condition, minor toning and foxing to paper), etching signed lower left and pencil titled 'Oak with Farmer Ploughing' lower left and on verso, pencil numbered '112 B' upper left, attached to mat (overall good condition, toning, staining and foxing to mat with sun fading), unsigned landscape etching with pine trees and clouds (good condition, toning and minor foxing to paper), and etching pencil titled 'Summer Storm' lower left, etching signed lower left and initially signed lower right sealed in plastic protective cover with mat (good condition, not viewed out of mat). Provenance: descended from the artist to the Christopher P.H. Murphy family collection. Christopher Murphy Jr. was a notable 20th century Savannah, Georgia artist. Murphy's artistic education started early as both of his parents were respected Savannah artists, and continued with formal training at the Art Students League. His superior technical skills allowed him to work in a variety of mediums and subject matter and he is best known for his city and landscape scenes of his home town Savannah. He was an active member of the Savannah Art Club and taught art classes around town. During his career his work was exhibited at the National Academy of Design, Art Institute of Chicago, New York Watercolor Club, American Watercolor Society, Sesquicentennial Exposition in Philadelphia, Whitney Museum, Victoria and Albert Museum, and the Southern Art League. His work is held in the permanent collections of the Morris Museum and the Telfair as well as in various private collections.Measurements: Height: of paper of panoramic landscape 11 in. x Width: 17 in.
