Claus Bertermann (1965) - Eau Rouge

Artist: Claus Bertermann OFFICIAL WEBSITE: www.bertermann.art The story behind "Eau Rouge" Spa-Francorchamps, the 1960s. A racing driver in car number 8 heads flat out towards Eau Rouge, the most famous corner in motor racing. The road dips, then rises in front of him like a wall and sweeps to the right at the top, while the asphalt rushes past in streaks of colour. A simple cloth mask protects his face from dust and oil. His eyes are calm, focused and full of confidence. He knows exactly what he is doing. And the oval rear-view mirror beside his steering wheel shows an empty road: he is out in front, and the rest of the field is long gone. And here is the twist: this legendary corner is named after a small, gentle stream. Eau Rouge means "red water", and the brook beneath the track runs reddish from the iron in the Ardennes soil. Bertermann takes the name literally and paints the road as a broad red current climbing the canvas. The driver rides it like a swimmer who trusts the water. Collectors who know "No Halo" will recognise the number 8: there the driver sits calmly beside his car after the race; here we meet him in the moment that makes a hero, at full speed, right where it counts. About the artist Claus Bertermann holds a Master's degree in Architecture (TU Munich) and is an internationally collected contemporary artist, with more than 1,000 large-format works in private and institutional collections, including a monumental triptych at the Technical University of Munich. His abstract paintings have reached top auction results such as €18,900 at C. h. r. i. s. t. i. e´s Paris and €15,240 at S. o. t. h. e. b. y´s Cologne, with further sales at V. a. n. H. a. m, A. r. t. c. u. r. i. a. l and D. o. r. o. t. h. e. u. m. In 2026 he started a radically new figurative series: people and scenes in bold, emotional colour, inspired by German Expressionism. First he paints the background with loose, broad brushstrokes. Then he draws the figures on top with oil stick, in clear and confident lines. Visual description The driver sits at the left in a dark blue helmet with the number 8 on a yellow roundel, his face in warm orange, a light cloth mask over mouth and nose, his eyes fixed on the road ahead. To the right, a large steering wheel with yellow spokes and round gauges, and to its left the oval rear-view mirror, empty and blue; above him, a broad red-brown band rises across the canvas, the climbing curve of Eau Rouge, set against turquoise and pale blue. At the lower left, a second number 8 on a white and pink roundel. Signed in oil stick at the lower right. One detail for those who look twice: the number 8 appears twice, once on the helmet and once on the car. Man and machine carry the same name. They are one team. Why it is worth the price A large, museum-scale painting from the first year of a radically new series. "Eau Rouge" continues the story begun in "No Halo": the same number 8, the same golden era, this time at full speed in the most celebrated corner in motorsport. That makes it a rare crossover piece, as appealing to collectors of contemporary figurative painting as to lovers of motorsport history, and a work full of energy that lights up any room.
