Coarse goethite with green

From our selection of collectible minerals, we propose a rare goethite formation in crystals on matrix from the Boccheggiano mine, Niccioleta, in the province of Grosseto. Furthermore, it features a botryoidal and mammillose surface covered by intense green, blue, and purple iridescences due to thin surface oxidation films, as well as the impressive dimensions of the specimen (over 20 cm and 1.7 kg), which enhance its aesthetic value and mineralogical importance. The specimen stands out for the quality of crystallization and for its overall aesthetic balance, with characteristics that exalt its natural structure and visual impact. Goethite is an iron(III) oxide-hydroxide (FeO(OH)) named after the German poet and naturalist Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, a passionate mineral collector. The green, blue and violet iridescences visible on the surface are not due to a pigment but to interference effects of light on ultrathin oxide films, the same principle that creates changing colors on some altered hematites and pyrites. The Boccheggiano mining district, in the Tuscan Metalliferous Hills, is historically known for the exploitation of copper-iron pyrites, whose iron-rich minerals have often altered into goethite formations such as this. This is an ideal specimen for mineral collections, display, and for those who appreciate the natural beauty of minerals, also in the field of crystal therapy and lithotherapy, according to the properties traditionally associated with the mineral species. All minerals are 100% natural and untreated, with only very rare exceptions always noted in the description. The photographs are taken with professional lighting to best highlight colors and details; however, slight variations in tone may occur depending on the device or ambient light.
