This color lithograph by Constant Nieuwenhuys, numbered 170/200, shows a strongly simplified, almost abstract representation in which animal figures seem to appear within large color fields. An expansive olive-green plane dominates the composition and is combined with gray, light blue, red and orange, while black, spontaneous lines shape the figural elements. The large open spaces and the loose drawing style give the work a sense of freedom and movement. The combination of abstract forms and recognizable motifs is characteristic of Constant's graphic work, in which color, line and imagination are more important than a faithful rendering. Constant Nieuwenhuys (1920–2005), usually simply called Constant, was a Dutch painter, draftsman, graphic artist and visual artist. In 1948, together with, among others, Karel Appel and Corneille, he was one of the founders of the international CoBrA movement, which aimed for a free, spontaneous and experimental form of art. During this period Constant drew inspiration from children's drawings, folk art and fantasy creatures. Later he increasingly focused on architecture and the relationship between people and their living environment. This culminated in his famous long-running project New Babylon, a visionary concept for a future city in which the creative, playful human being stands at the center.
